IGN: Michelle, you're joining the cast this season, what character are you playing and how does it tie with the show?

Michelle: If you watch the special we've put out, you know my character has links to Hundred Eyes, who is a greatly loved character. There's a lot of history there, and I was actually being set up for this character by the end of Season 1, so it's great to finally come out of the shadows and be a part of the show.

(04/11/16) Netflix announced at a press conference in Paris that the second season of Marco Polo will launch globally on July 1, 2016. (teaser)

The 10 episode series, created by John Fusco, stars Lorenzo Richelmy (Marco Polo), Michelle Yeoh (the Handmaiden), Benedict Wong (Kublai Khan), Joan Chen (Empress Chabi), Zhu Zhu (Kokachin), Tom Wu (Hundred Eyes), Olivia Cheng (Mei Lin), Claudia Kim (Khutulun), Rick Yune (Kaidu), Remy Hii (Prince Jingim), Mahesh Jadu (Ahmad) and Uli Latukefu (Byamba) among others.

John Fusco, who wrote the Academy-Award nominated feature Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, is an executive producer and showrunner along with Dan Minahan, whose previous work includes Homeland and Game of Thrones, with Patrick Macmanus, Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Elizabeth Sarnoff as executive producers.

Marco Polo is produced by The Weinstein Company for Netflix. It will be available in 4K.

(12/26/15) Netflix released Marco Polo: One Hundred Eyes, a 30 minute special feature written by John Fusco and directed by Alik Sakharov. Michelle makes a brief appearance.


(12/22/15) It was offiially announced that Michelle will appear in a recurring role in Season 2 of the Netflix original series, Marco Polo. She will join forces with Hundred Eyes as The Handmaiden.

Released in December 2014, the first season of the historical fiction drama series follows Venetian explorer Marco Polo (Lorenzo Richelmy) through his adventures in 13th-century China after he is taken prisoner by Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong), the Khagan of the Mongol Empire and the founder of the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) of China.

"Michelle Yeoh is not only a screen legend and one of the greatest international action stars of all time, she's one of the best actors of her generation. So we are thrilled to have her join one of the most diverse ensembles in television and bring her unique talents to Marco Polo. Her role in the second season is one that's going to add even more intrigue, mystery, and Asian martial arts to our rich story world," said John Fusco, writer and executive producer of the series.

The second season was filmed in Malaysia and Eroupe during the second half of 2015. It will be released in 2016.
