| An audience gave Michelle a painting which was painted by a fan from Florida. The painter actually mailed it to L.A. and asked a friend to give it to Michelle, along with a letter. | |||

From
Hong Kong Movie News and
Rumor (7/18/98)
Michelle Yeoh at the Shrine
A report from Jeff "Koganuts" Koga (webmaster of
"Bullet In The Web"):
"Sit your asses down." - Michelle Yeoh to
the audience when they gave her a standing ovation when she first appeared. :)
So I went to the LA Comic Book and Sci-Fi Convention on Sunday to see
Michelle Yeoh... quite a turnout.
Michelle's manager Terence Chang, his assistant Lori, and even Woo's
three children all showed up.
She was great. Answered everyone's questions with zest and vitality.
She seemed to really enjoy being there, and even told everyone a few
times that she loved them. :) At one point, she stopped siting
behind
the table and got in front of it, much to the delight of the male fans
and photographers.
She's nice, friendly, feisty, and just plain cool. I had gotten
that
impression from past interviews and in particular, her appearance on
The Howard Stern Show to plug Tomorrow Never Dies, but it was great
to
see her amongst her fans.
Most of the questions were interesting, but as usual, there were a
few odd ones. One guy asked a normal question, and then at the
very
end, as he was leaving the mike, said that he thought she'd be great
in Walker: Texas Ranger. Huh? Um, dude, that's a step *DOWN*,
not
*UP*.
On walking vertically down the wall in Tomorrow Never Dies... she
said she had to make it look easy, because she had to use her stomach
muscles and her back muscles to find the right balance.
She graphically talked about the stunt (forgot the name of the HK
film) that literally broke her back... she felt her legs touch her
head... backwards! Eep!
She said she'd love for her next movie to be a comedy, even though she
enjoys doing action films.
She said she'd also love to do a musical, what with her dance
background and all.
She mentioned more than once that she'd love to work with John Woo,
since Terence Chang is both her manager and Woo's manager. And
she
even addresses that comment towards Woo's children. :) She even
said
that since he has said he'd love to work on a musical, she'd love to
be in a Woo musical.
She said that most scriptwriters are smart enough to not send her the
typical "damsel in distress" sort of stories.
One teenaged Asian guy said, "I love you."
One guy requested her to kick his ass.
One little Asian boy, probably around eight, was lucky enough to sit
next to Michelle for most of the autograph session. Many of the
guys
standing in line around me were VERY envious.
I was hoping someone would ask Michelle about... Unfortunately, no one did, but in the autograph line, I did ask about
#1 when I got right up to her. She responded with, "Keep your
fingers crossed," crossed her fingers, and smiled. A report from Jonah Lee:
Michelle was very article and deftly answered all the
questions the
audience asked. She refused was the a request by an audience
member to be
kicked by her. She said she didn't have the insurance to
cover that. And
when a smoker asked her about some footage he had of her smoking, she
admitted that she had an occasional cigarette, but she is trying to
quite
and isn't endorsing smoking in any way. I bet she didn't
expect those
questions!
When asked about the Charlie's Angels script Michelle
replied that she
could maybe be Charlie and not an Angel. She said that she is
fielding
many scripts and offers for various action scripts (in none of which
is she
the damsel in distress), and she is also considering working on a drama.
And she is also waiting for a script from one of the members of the
audience. Michelle also mentioned her favorite directors.
She would love
to work with John Woo, even dancing in the musical he says he would
always
like to do. She also mentioned Steven Speilberg and Sammo Hung.
At one point Michelle Yeoh had the microphone removed
from the stand so
she could come around to the front of the table, causing a wave of
amateur
photographers to rush toward the stage. And after taking a picture
with
the child of the screenwriter she knows she retreated behind the table,
so
she could stop being bad, not that we minded!
One audience member asked her what she thought about her
fans, and she
quickly replied that she loved them. She would love to come out
and hang
out with her fans. One audience member screamed for her to come
and sit
next to him. When Michelle saw he was next to his girlfriend
she told the
woman to slap her boyfriend for that, though she relented when the
girlfriend neglected to hit her significant other.
Ms. Yeoh talked about her background in ballet dancing,
and the spinal
injury that prevented her from continuing, and her eventual start as
an
action hero. She also admitted that working with Jackie Chan
is quite an
experience because he is so chauvanistic, though he does grudgingly
admit that she is his match I no other woman is.
Getting to see Michelle Yeoh and get her signature, on
my Criterion
SUPERCOP Laserdisc, was well worth the five and a half hour wait.
My only
problem is that I didn't ask her about working on the SOONG SISTERS.
All
she really talked about was her action films.
